Boma – Flavors of Africa, Breakfast

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge offers great vegan options. From Sanaa’s easily made Indian-style Bread Service, to the vegan menu at Jiko – A Cooking Place. Boma – Flavors of Africa may hail as our favorite of the table service locations here. Boma is a buffet that is open for both breakfast and dinner. We haven’t made it over to dinner yet, but have heard excellent things from our readers.

We have eaten at Boma for breakfast multiple times. It quickly became one of our favorite locations for breakfast in Disney World. Boma – Flavors of Africa is located on the first floor of the Jambo House, next to Jiko. The buffet here is huge, and the chefs are incredibly friendly.

During our recent trip here we told our server that we were vegan. She went to grab a chef and some soy milk for our coffee. Quickly our chef came out to chat with us. He told us that he would make us vegan Mickey Waffles and a tofu scramble. He also said he could make up the Pap vegan, but we passed. Pap is the African version of grits. He then walked us through the buffet.

On the buffet you can find grilled tomatoes, grilled asparagus and Chakalaka, which is like a salsa.

Next is the quinoa and oatmeal which is made with water. The quinoa contains honey and resembles a sad soup. The fried quinoa does not contain honey.

After that you can pop over to the tater tots, which are uniquely seasoned and are so good. Next to the tots are fried plantains. These are caramelized and delicious.

Additionally there is plain cut fruit for you to enjoy.

Our chef brought out our waffles and tofu scramble really quick. He told us to let him know if we needed anymore waffles, but given that he gave us a huge pile, we never requested more.

Mickey Waffles and Tofu Scramble

The waffles here are really good. We have encountered all different types on property, some being very gooey, some too crispy. Boma seems to have them down correctly and have never let us down.

The tofu scramble has a similar seasoning as the tater tots, which makes it a unique scramble. If we could figure out the seasoning mix on this we would totally make it at home.

Tofu Scramble

Also, let’s talk about tofu scramble in general real quick. Boma, Grand Floridian Cafe, and Trails End are the only restaurants I have seen a proper tofu scramble. Disney chefs, please take note. Scramble the tofu, please! No more cubes and stir fry sauce.

When we were done with our meal the chef brought out Erin McKenna’s Bakery Mini Brownie Cupcakes. We were all too full to eat them then, and they didn’t hold up too well in the heat as the frosting melted. But we still enjoyed the warm brownie part!

As you can see, you will not leave hungry at this breakfast location! It’s great that there is a little something for everyone here. Additionally they have vegan butter available if you want to have toast or a bagel.

If you have a car you can easily drive here for breakfast, or taking an Uber or Minnie Van works as well. If you plan on taking a bus to Animal Kingdom then another to Animal Kingdom Lodge give yourself at least an hour for transportation.

Back in 2014 I created Vegan Disney World after going to Walt Disney World several times and finding no resource for vegan options. Corey and I began this blog from our trips and have now moved closer to the mouse to eat around the parks on a weekly basis. Since the blog started we have cruised on Disney Cruise Line, gone to Tokyo Disneyland and to Disneyland in California!

  1. My family and I went here just a couple of weeks ago. I agree, the vegan Mickey Waffles and a tofu scramble were awesome! 3 out of 4 family members in our house are lactose intolerant, so we do eat a lot of vegan stuff, just to play it safe. The food was awesome and it seemed every restaurant we went too was very accommodating and always offered the manager to go through the menu with us.
