Kona Cafe with Friends

This review reflects our experience from September 2016.

Everyone who goes to Disney World will have a few of their own “Must-Do’s,” whether it’s food or a show or an attraction. One of our must-do’s is to get breakfast at Kona Cafe at Disney’s Polynesian Resort. On our last trip, we were lucky enough to meet up with one of our readers and her family. We had quite the group, 3 vegans, a couple allergies, and 3 who “eat anything!”

Inside Kona Cafe

When we were seated we made sure to speak with our server about all of our special needs and he brought us a chef. Our friend Stacey was doing the ordering, this was Stacey’s first time trying to order vegan Tonga Toast. We quickly informed the chef what we wanted and he had no issue with making us our meal. The menu (non vegan) Tonga Toast comes with a Strawberry Compote and a side of either Bacon or Sausage. The Strawberry Compote contains dairy (why!!) so instead they give us syrup and we often swap our meat for potatoes, but we know you can get fruit as well. Pro tip: ask for real maple syrup, they often have that in the back!

Tonga Toast with Potatoes

It seemed like forever, but our food finally arrived. Our delicious brick of Tonga Toast was glowing in front of us. Tonga Toast is a large portion of sourdough bread that has been stuffed with bananas then deep fried and rolled in cinnamon sugar. Talk about decadent!

Banana filling – Tonga Toast

As always, our Tonga Toast was amazing. The edges were super crispy and the inside was nice and soft. The warm bananas add a different texture and flavor explosion while digging in.

The potatoes here are so good. We love potatoes, but seriously, these things are so delicious. Garlicky, crispy, perfectly seasoned, incredible!

Tonga Toast with Potatoes

This is one of our favorite breakfast spots, we have eaten here several times and I have stepped outside the realm of Tonga Toast on a few occasions. To read about those experiences go here and here. Also, we have been told that they can make the Macadamia Nut Pancakes vegan as well, we’ll try to get those next trip. Also, if you’re not into a table service meal, we’ve recently been told you can get vegan Tonga Toast at Captain Cooks, the quick service at Disney’s Polynesian Resort!

Back in 2014 I created Vegan Disney World after going to Walt Disney World several times and finding no resource for vegan options. Corey and I began this blog from our trips and have now moved closer to the mouse to eat around the parks on a weekly basis. Since the blog started we have cruised on Disney Cruise Line, gone to Tokyo Disneyland and to Disneyland in California!
