This review reflects our experience from October 2015.
If you’ve been following our blog for a while you may have remember our love for Kouzzina by Cat Cora which unfortunately closed over a year ago. On our last trip we decided to head over to the BoardWalk to try its replacement, Trattoria Al Forno. Trattoria Al Forno is an Italian themed restaurant that is open for both breakfast and dinner. Dinner features pizzas, tons of pastas and decadent desserts. We were a little indifferent on trying this restaurant as the Italian restaurants on property are usually pretty boring for vegans, but we were willing to try since we had heard it was the similar staff of Kouzzina.
Once seated we informed our server that we were vegan. It was his first week at the restaurant so he made sure to go check and see what all was vegan for us. He returned with the chef and informed us that two salads are vegan (one has honey though), pizza without cheese or sauce (the normal sauce contained cheese but the chef did offer to make a different tomato sauce), the complimentary bread is vegan, they can make an off the menu pasta and there was a few desserts including strawberry basil sorbet, Rice Dream ice cream and Erin McKenna cupcakes. We decided to try a pizza and a pasta dish.
Our server brought out the bread for us and some oil for dipping. We didn’t ask about vegan butter. The bread itself was very good, crispy on the outside and hot and fresh in the middle. Once we finished out first loaf the server brought us another, nothing like unlimited bread!
Our food was delivered to the table from someone who wasn’t our server and we immediately noticed that this food was not vegan. Our server came over and asked what we thought about our meal and we informed him that our food was covered in cheese and not vegan. He quickly apologized and took the food from us.
After a few minutes our actual food came out. Corey got the vegan version of the Roasted Portobello Mushroom and Cipollini Onions with Arugula. His pizza did not have cheese and had an olive oil base. The crust was super crispy and the pizza itself was very garlicky. He said the arugula didn’t add much, but as a whole he really enjoyed the pizza.
I received an off the menu pasta that was just noddles, sauce and a bunch of mushrooms. The pasta sauce was spicy, which was kind of strange and some of the mushrooms were a weird texture. I didn’t really love this dish, I would have enjoyed the pizza more.
A few hours after we ate at Trattoria Al Forno I became very sick. I believe the pasta contained dairy, maybe in the sauce since the pizza sauce contained it normally. I have written to Disney Special Diets about this and made it known. If you decide to eat here I suggest you stick to pizza and dessert and just avoid the pasta all together.
Would we go back?
No. I don’t want to risk getting that ill again. However we did enjoy this pizza more than the one we have had at Via Napoli.
