Plant-based Crab Cake from Columbia Harbour House

THIS OPTION IS NOW THE PLANT-BASED CRISPY MUSHROOM ROLL

You may remember when they celebrated Walt Disney Worlds 50th anniversary with special food items throughout property. One of those special items was a vegan one at Magic Kingdom, and after the 50th ended they decided to change that option a little bit but keep it on the menu. So if you think this option sounds familiar, it is. Over at Columbia Harbour House, what was once the Doom Burger is now just the Plant-based Crab Cake.

This quick service restaurant is across from the Haunted Mansion in the Liberty Square portion of the park. This restaurant has all indoor seating, which can be found both on the ground level and upstairs. The Plant-based Crab Cake can be ordered via mobile ordering or in person. I always recommend mobile ordering where possible to avoid waiting around to order food.

The Plant-based Crab Cake features a vegan crab cake topped with a slaw on a vegan brioche bun. The previous version of it was on a black bun and had a massive slice of red onion on it. I wanted to give this dish another shot since I didn’t care for it back when I had it before, but things can change.

Plant-based Crab Cake Sandwich and Fries

Unfortunately this didn’t change, I still hated it. The texture of this sandwich was so mushy and thick. The crab cake itself was very thick then with the bun it made it all very bread heavy. The slaw adds literally nothing, you don’t taste it nor does it add texture. And this whole sandwich is so incredibly dry. There is no sauce, there is some sort of wetness to the slaw but it is not noticeable at all while eating it. The flavor of the crab cake isn’t very strong, but it does have a bit of an old bay flavor to it.

I tried to eat it without the top of the bun to see if it was more enjoyable and it wasn’t. I ended up throwing this away without having eaten half of it. I really wanted them to have improved this, but it was not improved at all.

I opted for fries as my side here. They were the only redeeming part of this meal. They were a perfect crunch with salt on them. We can also get the green beans here, which my friend said she put on her sandwich to help it out.

Out of all of the food I have eaten at Walt Disney World I have to say this was my least favorite thing. The flavor of the crab cake was okay, but the texture and dryness were really off putting to me. I truly miss the Lighthouse Sandwich and wish they would bring back that delicious hummus and slaw based sandwich. I recommend skipping this one and heading elsewhere in Magic Kingdom. If you have Keys to the Kingdom booked I want to note that they have been dining here or Pecos Bill recently, but here more than not.

Back in 2014 I created Vegan Disney World after going to Walt Disney World several times and finding no resource for vegan options. Corey and I began this blog from our trips and have now moved closer to the mouse to eat around the parks on a weekly basis. Since the blog started we have cruised on Disney Cruise Line, gone to Tokyo Disneyland and to Disneyland in California!

  1. Melissa, your face in the youtube thumbnail says it all! I’ve been there with a disappointing vegan option.
