‘Ohana Plant-based Feast for Vegans

Have you ever wondered what ‘Ohana dinner looks like as a vegan? I have finally experienced it outside of breakfast and come to give you a look at the options and how I felt about it. One thing to note for this meal is that there are no characters during this meal time, unlike breakfast. Like breakfast though, it is family style and all you-care-to-enjoy. This restaurant can be found at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort.

The meal starts with Dinner Rolls and a mixed green salad. The rolls for us are gluten free and vegan and come with Earth Balance vegan butter. The rolls were very dry and definitely not my beloved Bloomfield Farms rolls. I had to drink some water to get these down, so that was not a good start for us.

The Mixed Greens Salad comes with a citrus vinaigrette that was very nice. The salad was obviously a mixed green base with carrots, cucumber, red onion, and grape tomatoes. The dressing had a light sweetness to it and was really enjoyable. If I wasn’t planning on eating so much other food I would have eaten more of it.

The main platter here features the ‘Ohana Noodles with Teriyaki, Stir-fry Vegetables, Edamame Dumplings, Guava-Pineapple Glazed “Chicken”, Plant-based “Sausage”, and Black Pepper-Teriyaki Plant-based Beef and Broccoli.

The noodles had a nice texture and a light sweetness to them. Everyone raves about these noodles. I found them enjoyable but pretty basic. The more I ate them the more I liked them though. The stir-fry vegetables were pretty simple but were nice with the noodles.

The edamame dumplings were soft in the main filling part with a nice crispy bite where they were sealed. They had a strong edamame flavor which was enjoyable. The menu says they are tossed in a Garlic-Chili Sauce, but ours didn’t seem to have any that I noticed.

When it came to the protein platter they loaded it up. I really liked the flavor of the glaze for the “chicken” but our chicken was very hard and dry. Not all of it was, but there were some bites that were definitely a bit tough to chew though. The parts that weren’t hard were very nice though. I believe they are now using Impossible chicken here rather than the Gardein.

The sausage was very dry as well, it seemed like the vegan proteins had been sitting waiting or something because this whole platter was not nearly as good as the sides. I used the sauce that was sitting at the bottom of the protein platter with my sausage and that made it much more enjoyable.

The plant-based beef and broccoli was good, but the beef was very mushy. I do think that’s just how those often are though and don’t think that had to do with them sitting out. That being said, the flavor was very nice and I liked the addition of the broccoli.

For dessert we get a Bread Pudding with Soy-Based Frozen Dessert. This comes topped with pineapple and was a great portion size. It comes out as an individual dish rather than a sharing one like the rest of the meal. I did really enjoy this, but the coconut bread pudding from Sebastian’s Bistro is superior.

So what this all comes down to is is this meal worth the price tag of $65? For me, not really. I was so full leaving there, but the quality of some of the food wasn’t as good for me as other spots. Would I come here on the dining plan and hope to get a fireworks view? Yes I would. But for me spending actual money and not Disney Dining Plan dollars, no. I’ll stick to their breakfast in the future.

Back in 2014 I created Vegan Disney World after going to Walt Disney World several times and finding no resource for vegan options. Corey and I began this blog from our trips and have now moved closer to the mouse to eat around the parks on a weekly basis. Since the blog started we have cruised on Disney Cruise Line, gone to Tokyo Disneyland and to Disneyland in California!
