There’s a few restaurants in Walt Disney World we have just always generally avoided due to them either not having anything remotely vegan (steakhouses, etc.) or ones that appear to give people conflicting information. One of those has always been La Hacienda de San Angel in Epcot’s Mexico Pavilion. While we love Mexican food, we had always heard mixed reports about chicken stock, lard, and other things, which had turned us off from trying it. But then they started having a Vegetarian menu, which was more appealing to us, but we still didn’t go. We finally tried La Hacienda de San Angel and we were blown away.
La Hacienda de San Angel is located along World Showcase Lagoon (San Angel Inn is the restaurant located inside the pavilion) and is only open for dinner. Some of the restaurant has views of the water, some does not. So this isn’t a great option if you want to watch IllumiNations from dinner. We were sat in the back corner with a view of nothing but it was nice and cozy for dinner.
After being seated, we spoke with the server about being vegan. Since they don’t have allergy menus here she said she would grab a chef for us. On the menu we noticed several options actually said vegetarian, which was nice to see since they removed the vegetarian menu. Quickly a chef came out to speak with us with our server. He told us that the vegetarian items on the menu are completely vegetarian (no chicken stock) and that we could get any of them vegan by ordering without cheese and aioli. He also said he has a vegan rice he does that we could also have. We ended up ordering the Enchiladas de Vegetales without cheese and the Tacos de Vegetales without cheese.
La Hacienda de San Angel has complimentary chips and salsa, which we destroyed. The salsa had a good heat and wasn’t huge chunks of tomato, does anyone actually like that? We washed them down with the house margarita too.
Our food arrived and looked amazing. The Vegetable Enchiladas were filled with yellow squash and zucchini, topped with a red sauce and purple cabbage. They had a really good flavor and kick to them. The enchilada sauce really made them.
The Vegetable Tacos were also very good. They were filled with the same vegetables as the enchiladas, but also with black beans. They were also topped with purple cabbage and had a corn salsa. The corn didn’t add much. If I ordered this again I would ask for guacamole in replacement of the cheese and aioli we removed.
Along with our entrees they brought us vegan rice and black beans without cheese. We were so full from our entrees, and the basket of chips, that we didn’t each much of this. The rice was really good and the beans were very creamy. I wish I had more room to enjoy them.
All of our food was awesome. I’m glad we put off going here when they were still working out the kinks of understanding veganism. This food was absolutely delicious and so were our margaritas. Next time (because yes I will absolutely eat here again) I want to try the guacamole appetizer too.
